‘Fever’ Movie Review: Disappointing and Flawed Thriller That Leaves You Cold

As the popular relationship status goes: It’s complicated.
More, the plot is convoluted, quite one-dimensional (the filmmakers claim it will leave us ‘suspensed,’ but it actually leaves us suspended in limbo between gripping and bizarre). I am a thriller addict since childhood and come comics, books, serials or movies, I love even thrillers that many others may not appreciate as much. I even liked “Roy,” a disaster at the box office, because it was novel in concept, and can watch the greats from “Jewel Thief” to “Gupt” and beyond endless times.

Speaking of “Roy,” we have an element from it here, more bizarrely expressed, of course, and minus a star and catchy music. To be sure, there are 14 songs used as is the silly non-Hindi film way nowadays, but the lyrics and music are best not commented upon, but for a catchy hook and some okay lines in “Ishqa.”

Frankly, I thought that the film should not have been obsessed with its layering just to intrigue the audience. The layers are completely overdone and the denouement, basically sensible, still does not explain many a sequence, because in the ‘suspensed’ overdrive, the writer-director, after one point, seems to have stopped caring for any sense or logic.

The ease with which Armin the hero (Rajeev Khandelwal) and his friend Kaavya (Gauahar Khan) dispose of a corpse is simplistically absurd. Add the fact that neither Armin nor Kaavya actually are themselves and we do not understand how Kaavya is listed as Kaavya on Google as a librarian in Bern (the entire film is based in Switzerland). Also, if Kaavya is a librarian, why does she reside permanently in the hotel where Armin is staying?

An Indian doctor (Victor Banerjee) finances Armin in the town, as Armin has (selectively) lost his memory after an accident, till he presumably recovers. Armin is in no hurry, even seeks a passport from a forger who deals in fake passports, and so (Armin, not the forger) is chased by cops. There are too many absurdities, loopholes and flaws. We stop bothering after a time, hoping that the solution will explain it all.

It does not.

What we thus get is a delectable tour (fantastic work by DOP Mujahid Raza) of Switzerland and lots of intimate scenes where Armin is sleeping with various women, and Kaavya apart, no one has a role worth its salt. Gemma Atkinson is Rhea, and addresses Armin as Karan. Newcomer Ankita Mackwana as Grace has little to do but show her assets, and Caterino Murino, the Bond girl is wasted in an inconsequential role. The post-climax is ludicrous.
In short, including the meaningless title, this one leaves you flummoxed. Khandelwal is a shade wooden, and Atkinson is just adequate. Khan is the only one who draws some attention.
Rating: *1/2

Fever Movie Review

Aug 08 2016

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

  • Producer : Ravi Aggarwal, Mahesh Balakundari

  • Staring : Rajeev Khandelwal, Gemma Atkinson, Gauahar Khan, Caterina Murino

  • Director : Rajeev Jhaveri

  • Music Director : Ranjit Barot, Tony Kakkar, Onésia Rithner, Shamir Tandon

  • Cinematography : Mujahid Raza

  • Story : Rajeev Jhaveri

  • Screenplay : Rajeev Jhaveri

Story:
Armin (Rajeev Khandelwal) loses his memory in a car accident in Switzerland. While Armin remembers his name, he keeps getting flashes of his past followed by some hallucinating visions making him confused as to what is happening. During the course of time, he meets a fellow tourist Kavya (Gauahar Khan) who after knowing his condition tries to help him regain his memory.

Review:
The one liner story is interesting but has already been showcased in many movies. Rajeev Khandelwal looks great and delivers his part with a lot of ease. Gauahar Khan adds the glamour aspect and lends support in terms of her character.

However, there is nothing exceptional in the movie as the story requires a gripping screenplay which is lacking here. Yet the director manages to keep you involved throughout the proceedings even the climax is predictable. The movie is a bit of drag and runs on a lethargic pace which becomes worse due to repetitive scenes. While the writing seems to be made to look like complicated but it fails at the execution.

The camera work is of top notch and the locales in Switzerland and Paris have been showcased brilliantly. Too many songs interrupt the flow of the movie. ‘Kharaa Khaara’ and couple of more songs have good visuals and are melodious.

Fever is definitely below the potential of Rajeev Khandelwal and he needs to focus more on movies that enhances his acting skills.

Verdict:
Decent story but lacks soul!

Movie Review:
dainikbhaskar.com | Aug 05, 2016, 11:36 AM IST

Genre:
Director:

Movie Review: Fever – Watch If Suspense Is Your Preferred Genre

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

What if you wake up and do not remember who you are? What if you are made to search for your identity with no one to help you in the same? This is the premise that Fever works on. A premise that makes for a valid suspense thriller.
A man wakes up in a hospital, evidently after an accident, and all he remembers is that his name is Armin Salem and that he knows someone called Rhea. He sets out to find more about himself and in course he figures that he was possibly a contract killer. He was a rather stylish mercenary, with great taste in clothes and women. Along the way he meets someone called Kavya who falls in love with him, even as she shows some mysterious traits.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The screenplay keeps you in guess till the midpoint. It is only after the intermission that the screenplay starts falling apart. As Armin Salem finds other identities he realizes that someone is possibly trying to manipulate what he remembers.

The movie does not answer a lot of things. One of these questions is, why is the film set in Europe. While they have filmed the story in quaint localities of France and Switzerland, the locations in themselves do not add up to anything in the story. The same story could have very well been done in India. There are far bigger problems of course. Like, what was the use of getting former Bond girl Caterina Murino? The character given to Caterina has no significance in the story. Likewise the characters of Rhea (Gemma Atkinson) and Kavya (Gauhar Khan) are rather sketchy and drafted conveniently. The screenplay lacks depth for the same reason.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The final revelation arrives without any thrill and lacks impact. Having said the suspense for most part of the film sustains interest. Rajeev Khandelwal as Armin Salem is sincere. As an actor Rajeev possibly deserves more. The film does not offer him much of a challenge, and he does not find much difficulty in carrying what he has been provided. Gauhar Khan is not half as convincing. Surprisingly, Gemma Atkinson is!

Fever is a decent one-time watch if you are sucker for suspense thrillers. This is not the best thriller you may watch this season, but it will keep you hooked for most part. For others, this film may come across as drab.

STORY

Fever is nothing but a convoluted story of a ruthless contract killer, Armin Salem (Rajeev Khandelwal), who loses his memory in an accident and is struggling hard to put the pieces together to reconstruct his life and discover his true identity. Kaavya (Gauhar Khan) mysteriously stalks him in Switzerland, initially, but later, inexplicably becomes his friend and stands by him, offering him help. The rest of Fever is about how Armin bounces back and knows the real truth. Watch Fever to know about the complete story.

ANALYSIS

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The first half is replete with confusion and the audience loses the plot several times. The narrative heads nowhere and does not get you hooked, despite desperate efforts to be true to the thriller genre. The second half drags as well and the resolution of the plot leaves you disappointed and abounds in loopholes.
The stylised action, deafening background score and unwarranted scenes with forced attempts to add shock value do nothing to elevate the viewing experience. On the contrary, these make it even more complex and boring to watch.

PERFORMANCE

Rajeev Khandelwal as Armin Salem a contract killer from Paris is wasted. He has a commanding screen presence, but is not really able to elevate the quality of the badly etched character with his performance. He ends up appearing strictly mediocre. Gauhar Khan as Kaavya, a mystery woman who becomes his friend, delivers competently, but again is the victim of a poorly written script. Gemma Atkinson as Rhea Wagner, is endearing. The other actors with limited screen time including Victor Banerjee as Dr. Roy are wasted.
The film suffers because of a poorly written screenplay with no thought whatsoever having gone into it. It shuttles back and forth, aimlessly, confusing the audience as the film progresses. Director Rajeev Jhaveri displays his poor directorial skills, as the entire premise is dealt with in a manner that makes it unbelievable and a tad amateurish. The music by Ranjit Barot is a treat. “Mile ho tum” by Tony Kakkar and “Bas ek baar” by Arijit Singh are soulful songs but sadly a misfit in a film like this.

Final Word

Quote :

Fever is a film that can be completely ignored as it lacks clarity in all the departments. A film that can be ignored.

By Supriya Nair

Starring - Rajeev Khandelwal, Gauhar Khan, Caterina Murino and Gemma Atkinson

Director - Rajeev Jhaveri

Rating - *1/2 (For the locations)

The film begins with Rajeev Khandelwal a.k.a Armin losing his memory, just like the plot of the film. The rest of the story revolves around him trying to find his real identity.

So Armin wakes up in this hospital with faint memories of his past. It’s hard to believe that someone who falls out of a car in an accident, doesn’t have any major injuries, but forgets his whole existence. He also gets flashes of him murdering a woman and the fact that he is a contract killer. He meets Kavya Choudhary (Gauhar Khan) along the way and then slowly regains his memory. However, he still doesn't know what exactly is happening (so do we) but finds himself framed for murdering a woman.

This whole saga takes place in the breathtaking locales of Switzerland and Paris. Sadly, that's the only part you will take back with you after the film ends and will make you wonder why the director chose to shoot at such places. But eventually you will realise that the director tried to overshadow the weak script and poor acting through the locations used in the film.
In a scene when Armin entered someone's house, he was asked what he'd like to have and he replies saying, "My identity." Sigh! Other cheesy dialogues included "Life is a hit-and-run. Everything happens by accident..." (Just like this movie)

It's sad to see an actor like Rajeev Khandelwal being dragged down to roles like this one. While he was slightly bearable in the film, Gauhar Khan takes over-the-top acting to a whole new level. Her 'Monroe' diamond mole is as annoying as her acting in the movie. I still don't know how the Italian Bond girl Caterina Murino and British TV star Gemma Atkinson signed up for this movie. Nor do I know what they were doing in the film.

Finally coming to the background music of the film; The jarring tracks will make you grin not only because it throws the film off balance but also because they have used cliched albeit ridiculous soundtracks for several scenes. For instance, when Gauhar enters in a bikini, there's an actual song saying the words "wow she's so hot." (You don't say!)
In scenes where something 'thrilling' is about to happen, the stereotypical sad-woman-singing score ala 'Gumnam Hai Koi' from the 60's is ratted out at several intervals.

By the end of the movie you will not only wonder, 'what did I just see?' but also wonder how director Rajeev Jhaveri got people on board for this film.

Our Verdict:
If you want to avoid a headache, don't watch Fever.

FILM REVIEW:
First Published:05-08-2016 08:44:09 PMLast Updated:06-08-2016 11:32:31 AM

  • Genre – Thriller
  • Star Cast – Rajeev Khandelwal, Gauahar Khan, Ankita Makwana, Caterina Murino, Gemma Atkinson
  • Director –Rajeev Jhaveri
  • Rating –  2/5

Story Of The Movie

The movie revolves around a contract killer namely Armin Salem played by Rajiv Khandelwal. He met with an accident and lost his memory. It is the point from where all the misunderstanding starts and leads to a lot of twists and turns. Armin knows only his name and the name of the girl, who is trying to bring his memory back. In between all this, Kavya falls in love with the Armin Salem. Now what happens the next when Armin finds his memory back? Will Kavya gets engaged with him or not? You need to go for watching this movie as revealing more than it is not possible at all. Fever Movie review

And The Script Of The Movie

This movie is loaded with a number of attractive incidents, which are helpful to keep you engaged with the movie and will not let you bore. But the minus point of this movie is all about the speed. The first half of this movie goes well but the second half goes pretty much slow which may make you lethargic. The location are just outstanding and grab the attentions of the viewers. Though there are many points which can be sharped to make it more interesting.

Let’s Check Out The Performance

  • Rajiv Khandelwal – We all know what kind of actor he is as he has already proved his talent a number of times. Now, it is time to go ahead and watch how Rajiv looks in the role of an individual who has lost his memory. It is essential to mention that he played his role excellently and did enough justice. It is Rajiv’s up-to-the-mark performance. And you must go for watching this. Fever Movie review
  • Gohar Khan – She is going to play a major role in this movie opposite Rajiv Khandelwal. Being a girl who helped Armin to bring his memory back, she looked perfect. Apart from his beauty, fever is perfect movie to go through his acting skills. Fever Movie review

The Weakest Point Of fever

And if it is talked about the weakest point of the movie it is the speed and the story. There is nothing new in the story and may be many of you have already got an idea about the story and the twists & turns. If the work was done over its speed it become good and fantastic. Fever Movie review

Let’s Check Out The Music

After a gap of more than two years popular television actor Rajeev Khandelwal is back on big screen with his film ‘Fever’ releasing today. A suspense thriller, this Rajeev Jhaveri directorial features the actor playing an assassin. Looking at the trailer and songs, the film seemed promising with some nail-biting twist and turns, and not one but three stunning female leads. So will the ‘Fever’ of Rajeev Khandelwal remain with the viewers with this film? A big NO!

The plot begins with a suave, cool Armin Salem, a charming womaniser and a sharp contract killer. For Armin his target is someone he studies before laying them to rest in peace. A life filled with blood, money and women, takes a drastic turn as he meets with an accident in Valais, Switzerland. Waking up after four days in a hospital, Armin only recalls his name and that he has committed a crime which further keeps on disturbing his memory. He starts hallucinating some strange incidents with not one but two girls, Kavvya and Rhea. But as the story moves forward there are secrets which unveil some connection of Armin with Kavvya and Rhea beginning with the latter referring to him as Karan. Who is Karan? Will Armin be able to remember his real identity? What was the reason behind this accident? Is Armin’s life still under threat? All answers lie in this complicated, rather disappointing romantic suspense thriller ‘Fever’.

Talking about performances, Rajeev Khandelwal is known for delivering some good quality work in films, but perhaps his choice went wrong with ‘Fever’. His acting as Armin Salem, as expected is nice and engaging, but the impact is missing. In fact in a couple of scenes, it turns highly boring and even laughable due to the repeated lines and the same expression. Gauahar Khan as Kavvya is stunningly gorgeous but that is it. Her character has got the maximum screen time as compared to the two female leads and she even delivers good in few emotional scenes, but that’s the end. At a very integral point in the film, her expressions could have been much better, as she was seen in her past films ‘Ishaqzaade’ and ‘Rocket Singh: Salesman of the year’. Gemma Atkinson as Rhea is good, but the script doesn’t give her the opportunity to show her potential as a performer. Perhaps there are certain questions which are actually unanswered due to the so called thrilling twist and turns related to this character of Rhea.

The other two actresses Caterina Murino and Ankita Makwana are also introduced with Gemma in the movie. We wish that we could have written something if they at least had something like a guest appearance or special appearance. To be clear on this, they are just used as fillers in the storyline.

‘Fever’ is written by Rajeev Jhaveri who has also directed the film. About the writing, Rajeev has conceived a very good thrilling idea but his screenplay turns out to be too confusing and highly predictable in the second half. To add to it is the slow pace in the first half which shouldn’t be there at all in this specific genre. There is this very interesting point between reality and fiction in his story idea which is impressive but falls flat with those repeated dialogues and loose screenplay. Direction is fine but editing done by Rajeev himself again, could have been more crisp and sharp. But special mention should be given to his intro title edit which is one of the rare credible things you could see in ‘Fever’.

Technically the film has been shot very well, cinematographer Mujahid Raza deserves a special mention as the mood and tone of the film is a visual treat with the beautiful locations of Switzerland. The film has been majorly shot there.

The music of the film is given by multiple composers, but none of the songs except ‘Mile Ho Tum’ stays with you after leaving the cinema hall for its pure melody conveying the emotion of love beautifully.
To wrap it up, ‘Fever’ is something you could easily skip for this weekend as it would need a lot of patience to sit through the film. If you love to watch suspense thriller films and Rajeev Khandelwal’s acting, you could catch ‘Fever’ at your own risk.
